I'll leave
it up to you to figure out why he stopped reading and what he will do
next. I hope you get that Xian was pretty much crazy. A bit more
explanation: there was a Black Ops project to use Clerics- one approach
was to aggressively brainwash them and the other was to convert them
into a sympathetic way of thinking. Martin had additional motives for
helping Nate, primarily to help him, but also to use him as an argument
for the rehabilitation of those in the interment camps once he exposed
the truth. Neither Jen nor Nate knows whether he literally killed her
father, but as a Cleric in the Monastery that day, Nate put that
responsibility on himself and considered himself culpable. I imagined
Preston willing leaving because he was afraid of his children being
used as leverage against him. A final note, don't confuse former Cleric
John Preston with Statesman Prescott. I hope that makes things clearer
than I wrote it.
When I first heard about
Equilibrium, I was extremely excited. I'm a gun nut and a huge fan of
action films. To try and do something new and original with gun play is
difficult but Equilibrium pulled it off with Gun Kata. The story and
universe we were presented with was fascinating as well. I'm a guy
really into logic, rationalization, and apologetics. So in this
respect, Equilibrium wasn't perfect... I have this geekish tendency to
want explanations for everything and Equilibrium, in many ways, is more
of a symbolic fairy tale than a literal or technical movie. I wanted
more so I wrote it, heh.
Originally, I wanted to
write something episodic... Nathan would be a hidden Cleric for the
majority of the series and it would play out something like a cross
between a cop drama and Highlander (when Nate used Gun Kata or ran into
other hidden Clerics). But to be honest, I realized I was too lazy to
write such a story with any kind of regularity so I decided to make it
a one shot story. The gear shift changed the story and the intent so
I'm sorry for any choppiness. I also wrote this over a long period of
time when I had motivation, inspiration, or simply remembered to do
it... so that could be the source of any additional choppiness. So
forgive the writing, hope you could see what I was trying to do.
With the new storyline I
wanted to show that things wouldn't simply be "Happily Ever After." I
also wanted to show the problem with Mary's hedonistic statements
versus Jurgen's comment about restraint (something that I felt was lost
on a lot of people). To many, the film was about emotion, when to me it
was about freedom of choice and the responsibilities that come with
that. That's the way I saw the film and that's the way I wrote this fic.
The bit about the T30s using
caseless rounds is kind of a joke. In the film, a lot of muzzle flashes
go off without any casings being ejected. It's a common gun gaffe, no
biggie, but I decided to explain it as the Cleric guns being caseless.
The problem with that is that there are at least two times that casings
are clear, but who cares? Heh.
I don't agree with Jurgen
that human nature in one day without Prozium is enough. You have to
remember that the society Libria represented was developed before
Prozium and that there are stoic and emotionally repressed societies
today without the use of Prozium. So I tried to show that a little.
Writing this was both fun
and agonizing because I'd hit writer's block or write myself into a
corner... so I apologize especially for the ending, I hope you enjoy it
somewhat though. I tried to leave Preston untouched but still add hints
and connections to the film, so I hope you pick up on them. Thanks for
reading!
This is in not meant to
infringe upon Mr. Wimmer's vision. It's more of a tribute to how his
film can inspire future creativity. I've got a great respect for Mr.
Wimmer and will be a fan of his for life since he took the time out to
write me explaining certain things. Any creator who takes time out to
interact with his fans is definitely okay in my book! A big thanks to
Kurt Wimmer!
