From Wimmer to the
Equilibrium Fans
Feb.
8, 2004 - To Jen and all the fans of Equilibrium,
after the release of EQ I had to wonder whether I would ever see
another day fulfilling my life's ambition as a director on a film set
again. Or if, in fact, as it appeared, the thing that I wanted most in
life would now be forever out of my reach. Well, by the grace of God,
in a few hours, barring disaster, I will step onto a set once more. I
cannot predict the outcome on any level. I can only say that it was
extraordinarily hard getting to this point and that there is no doubt
that this is far and away in terms of scope, the most ambitious film of
this budget to ever be made, and that the odds are definitely not in my
favor. But Jen, the kind words of fans of EQ like yourself have buoyed
my spirits and given me the strength to fight my way back to this
point. From the bottom of my heart, thanks. I will endeavor to pay you
back in the only way I know how - by making the best film I can.
UltraViolet begins in 10 hours.
Your fan, Kurt

with you all the way!!) ...leave comments on the message board here...

UltraViolet:
Rough Cut vs. Studio Cut
by
Psyclops: I'm sure most of you
will be going to see
ULTRAVIOLET this weekend. I just got back from a showing here in Los
Angeles and I figured I'd start a thread discussing the various
differences between the cut that was screened last February, which I
had the opportunity to see, and the finished product. Some of the
changes are pretty insignificant while other scenes changed the way the
film was structured. I'll list as many as I can remember either way.
The rough cut of the movie ran about two hours in length while this new
version clocks in at 88 minutes. There will be spoilers contained
within so please tread carefully.

UltraViolet Opening Score On-line: Klaus Badelt
Posted on Hans Zimmer's Website: As it seems to be no plan for a cd
release, we decided to present the opening title online in a very bad
quality (to prevent illegal copy) (MP3-mono-96Kbs) in order to share
with you one of the most exciting Klaus Badelt's piece of music ever
composed...

UltraViolet Used New Transfer Technology
"UltraViolet uses the Sony e-VTR's enhanced file transfer
capabilities, working with Orbital Data's TotalTransport technology, to
speed the backhaul of dailies, allowing data files to be reviewed
electronically instead of the more time-consuming process of
distributing hard media via physical courier. The results are
significant savings in production time and budget."

Actor William Fichtner on Technology,
Movies, & Career
His latest movie is UltraViolet. Geeks
will recognize its director, Kurt Wimmer, as the director
of 'Equilibrium' in 2002. "Kurt
is a really smart gentleman. I had a really good experience shooting
UltraViolet 1 1/2 years ago in Hong Kong and Beijing." Milla Jovovich plays "Violet", a woman
with a blood-eating disorder, set in a futuristic world. "Milla is unbelievable", Fichtner says. "She has an inner torque, she is a super
hero. I don't think anyone could have played her part better than she
did, she was unbelievable, just like in Joan of Arc. She has such a
commitment. I play Garth, a super-techie guy who is taken with Milla's
character, but she is one notch above the ladder for him. I play a good
guy this time, and I think that no matter what other roles I ever might
portray for Kurt Wimmer, he will always ask me to play "good,
underground guys". Fichtner
played the leader of an underground resistance movement in Equilibrium.
"This film had a huge internet
underground following, of mainly teenagers. Many times I am stopped on
the street by 19-year olds shouting "hey dude!", remembering me from
Equilibrium, in specific"

- UFA Conference 2005 Report
Kurt
Wimmer Talks About Ultraviolet
“Ultraviolet took twenty years off my
life.” He said they chose to shoot in Shanghai…and said it was an
amazing city because it is Mainland China’s push to create Hong Kong’s
equal...
Milla, he said, is “a
killer Ukraine.” He recalled that on the set he asked her to punch him
expecting to get it in the stomach and she gave him a black eye...

Bright Lights Up Ultraviolet
Cameron Bright told SCI FI
Wire that he just wrapped production on the upcoming
SF-horror-adventure movie Ultraviolet, in which the 11-year-old actor
co-stars with Milla Jovovich (Resident Evil)..."It was fun," Bright
said. "The director [Equilibrium's Kurt Wimmer] wrote the screenplay.
It was lots and lots of green screens. Because it's an action movie,
there was a lot of that type of stuff. I did a lot of wire work
myself...There were [also] a lot of guns shooting and explosives..."

Ricardo Mamood Comments on Ultraviolet
Ultraviolet is currently filming on location
in Hong Kong. Jovovich is the leading star. [Ricardo] Mamood will be
playing her husband...Pressed for more details about the script for
Ultraviolet and what his scenes with Jovovich will involve, he
carefully sidesteps the question. "I don't know if I'm allowed to say
that," Mamood begins, "I'm her husband, I can tell you that much and
I'll leave the rest for you to watch. I don't want to give it away but
I'm very excited about it because to play opposite an established
professional actress is very good exposure."

Milla Jovovich Cast
- Roses are Red, Violet is Cast (CHUD)
- "Yes, it's true, we have cast Milla.
Though shooting's a ways off, with all
the prep necessary for this film, we've started physical training with
her already so we can hit the beach at a sprint. Acting ability was
always a given but I was relieved to find that she has excellent
fundamental kicking and punching skills as well as a basic coordination
that's allowing her to pick up sword and kali-stick basics along with
wu shu isometric forms relatively easily. Though it's sometimes also
the case with men, I think it's even more common with women that no
matter how much training you give them, you'll never be able to
convincingly transform them, both in terms of physicality and in terms
of attitude, into warriors. It's tricky business - Linda H. Sigourney,
maybe a few others - the list of success isn't very long. But when I
watch the tapes of our sessions with Milla, sword arced over her head,
I can see in her eyes - she's a killer." - Kurt Wimmer

"...I am off to
China tonite to begin the undertaking of making this film. Between now
and February 9th - the first scheduled day of principal photography -
lie innumerable pitfalls; any of which could scuttle the
production and send me back to America. But if I make it that far,
and beyond, through the very long shoot - then, I will do everything in
my power to make for you and for me - the best film I possibly can. Kurt

Hollywood’s
$300 million Production Sets the Stage in Hong Kong
Hollywood’s
$300-million sci-fi Ultraviolet (directed by Kurt Wimmer) is at the
height of pre-production in Hong Kong. Starring Milla Jovovich of The
Fifth Element, the director decided to shoot 80% of the film in Hong
Kong — a leap from 20% in the original plan, and to extend the period
of filming from February to May. As the story takes place a millennium
from now, the first crew arriving at Hong Kong last November was mainly
engaged in scouting about for modern buildings. We helped them with
work visa applications to the Immigration Department and location
scouting. So following Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, Hong
Kong’s unique cityscape will be laid once again before the eyes of the
world. The film company will hire 120 local film workers, which is
expected to benefit the economy. (no link )

MillaNews.com not only has a bunch
of photos of the cast & crew of UltraViolet but also a letter from
Milla Jovovich describing her trained & experience preparing for
the film... (go Milla!!)
Training for UV
(Ultraviolet) has been SOOOO amazing! It's really the best experience
I've ever had I think. All the guys on the stunt team are super cool
and the girls are super hot! hehe. I've been trying to document my
experience here as much as possible for you guys, so you'll see lot's
of pictures of everyone I've been spending everyday with. I'm learning
some of the craziest stuff, you don't even know! And we'll be doing
things with weapons that can only come out of a true synthesis of an
American AND Hong Kong crew. Really Mike Smith (the stunt coordinator)
and Kurt Wimmer (the director) have dreamed up a whirlwind that (if I
can pull it all off! Yikes!) will be pretty damn cool. I've been
training from 11am to about 6pm mon. thru fri. and my body is going
through the loop, but I don't care, every second of pain is worth it to
make Violet come to life... - Milla Jovovich, Letter
